Brown Boveri Compressor Reliability Upgrade with AI-Powered Vibration Monitoring

TradeMark Nitrogen continues to invest in plant reliability, predictive maintenance, and operational excellence through the installation of advanced Kappa X Triaxial Vibration and Temperature Sensors (made in the UK) supplied by LUDECA on our Brown Boveri compressor system.

These wireless industrial condition-monitoring sensors continuously measure vibration and temperature at a 10 Hz sampling rate, providing real-time equipment health data for one of the most critical rotating assets in our nitric acid manufacturing facility. Unlike conventional vibration monitoring systems that focus on a single plane, the Kappa X sensors monitor vibration in three directions simultaneously—horizontal (X-axis), vertical (Y-axis), and axial (Z-axis)—creating a comprehensive view of machine performance.

A key advantage of the system is its Artificial Intelligence (AI) capability. Following installation, the sensors learn the normal operating characteristics of each bearing and machine location, establishing a baseline vibration signature unique to our Brown Boveri compressor. This machine-learning approach allows the system to recognize subtle changes in operating conditions long before they become visible during routine inspections.

As operating data accumulates, the AI continuously compares current conditions against the established baseline and can identify early indicators of bearing wear, shaft misalignment, mechanical looseness, rotor imbalance, coupling issues, lubrication deficiencies, and other developing equipment problems.

The Brown Boveri compressor is one of the most important pieces of equipment at the TradeMark Nitrogen facility. Operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, it supplies process air essential to nitric acid production. Because of its critical role, even a short, unplanned outage can impact production rates, customer deliveries, maintenance costs, and overall plant efficiency.

By implementing AI-powered predictive maintenance technology, TradeMark Nitrogen can move from reactive repairs to condition-based maintenance. Early fault detection allows maintenance activities to be planned and scheduled before reliability is affected, helping improve safety, reduce downtime, extend bearing life, and optimize maintenance resources.

The installation of the Kappa X sensor system reflects TradeMark Nitrogen's ongoing commitment to reliability engineering, asset management, and continuous improvement. Through advanced vibration analysis, temperature monitoring, and machine-learning technology, the company continues to strengthen equipment reliability while supporting safe, efficient, and uninterrupted operation of its nitric acid production facility.
